The iPad: Like an iPhone, Only Bigger

CEO Steve Jobs took the stage to unveil the device, which has been the subject of often dizzying speculation and excitement in recent weeks. "We want to kick off 2010 by introducing a magical and revolutionary product today," Jobs said.
The expectation and hope for many has been that Apple will revolutionize both the e-reader and tablet computing markets, just as it did with the cell-phone and PDA markets through the iPhone.
The iPad features a 9.7-inch (25-centimeter) multi-touch, in-plane switching LCD display; it is half an inch (1.3 centimeters) thick and weighs 1.5 pounds (.6 kilograms). The main processor is a one-gigahertz chip made by Apple, and the device is said to come with 10 hours of battery life when in full use.
Along with 802.11n wireless and Bluetooth, the iPad will connect to AT&T's 3G wireless network. But the data plan is a hybrid of what is offered for phones and laptops already. Users will be asked to pay either $14.99 a month for up to 250 megabytes of data, or $29.99 a month for unlimited data.

Google Chrome extensions officially launched

Google has launched the official gallery of Chrome extensions late Tuesday, putting one of the key missing pieces of the browsing puzzle into place. If you’re on a developer Chrome version, you can now take advantage of built-in extensibility to customize the browser with dozens of third-party extensions. Google claims Chrome extensions are as easy to create as webpages. Users can install and uninstall them quickly without restart, and they sport a great polished look that fits in with Chrome’s minimalist aesthetic, the search company said.

Note that extensions aren’t quite ready in beta, let alone stable Chrome versions. Nevertheless, it’s clear this will be a headline feature in the next Chrome update. Google’s product manager Brian Rakowski wrote in a blog post that extensions won’t tax the browser’s performance and jeopardize users’ security due to a clever design:

How to deal with a cracked iPhone screen

Mark it down… another iPhone casualty. Since the first day of its release the iPhone has been cracking. The iPhone’s glass screen might be a beautiful window into one of the best smartphones ever made, but drop it the wrong way, just once, and it’s done for.

Once the screen is cracked the phone will probably still be usable. Of course you have to worry about it cracking further, plus there is the small detail of you having to hold it against your face. A new screen will run you $199 through Apple, a handsome sum thanks to the fact the capacitive touchscreen has to be replace along with the glass cover. Third part services will replace screens as well, generally for a little over $100.

Yahoo jumps on Twitter bandwagon to improve search

Yahoo Inc. is jumping on the Twitter bandwagon in its latest attempt to get people to use its Internet search engine more frequently.

Beginning Thursday, Yahoo will mine the short messages posted on Twitter to find fresher information about hot topics.

Microsoft Corp. and Google Inc. had earlier announced plans to incorporate Twitter messages into search results, but Yahoo said it will be the first among them to include such "tweets" on its main search results.

Google's Chrome OS to be ready by late 2010

Consumers will have to wait until late 2010 to find out if Google Inc.'s new operating system can deliver on its promise to make low-cost computers run faster.

Google set the late 2010 target date Thursday during its first preview of a much-anticipated operating system that eventually may mount a challenge to Microsoft Corp.'s Windows the foundation for most personal computers since the 1990s.

The Internet search leader announced plans in July for an operating system named after its Chrome Web browser. At the time, Google said Chrome OS would be ready during the second half of 2010. That left open the possibility that Chrome OS computers could be on sale as early as next summer.
